After focusing on incentives, Flanders is changing tack. From 1 July 2025, certain businesses and publicbuildings in the north of the country will be obliged to install photovoltaicpanels on their roofs . This measure marks a new stage in Flemish energy policy , with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Who is affected by this obligation?
Two categories of players need to prepare for this regulatorychange :
Firstly, the 2 ,500 businesses that consume more than 1 GWh per year, equivalent to the average consumption of 250 households. Secondly, the 1 ,300 publicbuildings whose annual consumption exceeds 250 MWh, or around 62 households.
From July 2025, these structures will have to equip their roofs with a minimum output of 12.5 Wp per squaremetre . This requirement will be increased to 25 Wp/m² by 2035.
And why not extend this initiative to the whole of Belgium?
The objective is clear: to reduce our carbon footprint while optimising our energy costs. This is no longer an option, it’s a necessity for businesses and public institutions.
Solar energy is the future, and it’s already here. If you’re a company or local authority, it’s in your interests to get ahead of the game and adopt this standard before it becomes mandatory everywhere!
